It started on a Friday. Well, the idea was shown to us on a Friday afternoon. A couple of us in the crowded room turned our heads, looked at each other and nodded agreeingly. This was a good idea. Not only that, but it was a small act of kindness that would lead to a greater act of kindness. It seemed achievable.
We saw what Chicago had done. It was something that used to happen. Not in our memory, well at least in recent memory, but it used to happen. Members of the community would come together, eat together, share ideas and help one of those that wanted to help all of them.
We wanted that back. With that, the beginnings of #gpsoup began. It really started on Twitter. Emails were exchanged. And we realized how easy it was. Easy, based on one small, little detail. Will people actually show up?
It's our hope that you will.
We are meeting the last Sunday of every month. Everyone is asked to bring $10 or donation of your choosing. We also ask everyone to bring a can of soup to be donated as well.
Your $10 donation gets you three things. A bowl. A spoon. A vote.
After a meal of soup and bread we will, as a group, listen to proposals from members of our community. Each proposal has five minutes to explain to those gathered why their idea would benefit the citizens of Grande Prairie.
At the end of the presentations, you will be asked to submit your vote as to which idea has the most merit. We are not looking for the biggest, or the best idea. We as a group will have roughly $500-$1000 to grant someone, that's not a lot of money, unless there's some real ingenuity involved.
The idea should be something that hasn't been done before. It should be a new solution to an old problem. It should be smart. It should be beautiful. It should make us step outside of ourselves and realize the vibrant city that is around us. It should help us connect with each other. It should help us see the world through each other's eyes. Ultimately, trying to avoid cliche, it should make the world a better place to be.
It doesn't have to be big, to have an impact. The group could vote for a painting, or a song, or even just a simple thought. There are no rules in this. Vote how you want. Even if the idea is crazy. If it makes you smile, then you it will make someone else smile. If it challenges you, and makes you think, it will do the same to someone else. Vote with your heart, not your head. It's okay to dream. That's what gpsoup is all about.
